Topic: Losing security tab on file(s)
All,
I am running into a very weird occurance that I am unsure how to Diagnose.
I have a Dell PowerVault 750N (NAS) Server running Windows 2000, the server
is a member server used ONLY for file storage, it is using NTFS.
A couple months ago I had a user tell me they could not open up a PDF file,
it gave them an access denied message. When I looked at the file I found
that it had NO security tab. I attempted to force inheritance of rights to
the file but got an error message. Couldn't move it, couldn't copy it,
nothing..... I rebooted the server and the security rights returned.
A couple weeks later I ran into the same thing, different directory,
different file, again a reboot fixed the problem.
This has happenend no less than 10 times in the last couple of months. I am
not getting any error messages in the event logs. I have found no pattern in
terms of locations of the files, or who the user is once the security tab it
back. The only common part that I have found is that everytime so far it has
been a PDF file. However that may be an unfair determination since we store
tens of 1000s of PDF files as production documentation.
If anybody has any ideas on how to diagnose this I would be very willing to
hear them.
Thanks
Jim C
